Abstract
The shortage supply of fish meal for bull frog (Rana catesbeina) feed can be solved by replacement of protein sources from other feed ingredients. Hydrilla meal which its digestibility improved by microbial fermentation and smooth caridina (Caridina laevis) meal become a good candidate to replace fish meal as source of protein for bull frog feed.This experiment aimed to evaluate the use of fermented hydrilla meal by Biofad microbes and smooth caridina meal to replace fish meal as source for bull frog feed. At the natural temperature cycles, fresh hydrilla was fermented anaerobically using Biofad microbes for 20 days, then fermented aerobically using Bio Activator microbes for 25 days. The result of fermentation was reduction of hydrilla fiber contents; therefore its digestibility may increase. The protein source of treatment feed was fermented hydrilla meal and smooth caridina meal, and that of control feed was fish meal. Bull frog at the density of 20 animals per box were distributed randomly to six boxes. During 102 days, frogs were fed at the satiation level twice a day. The experiment was run in triplicate in randomized complete designs. The results (average±standard error) show that feed conversion of treatment (1.172±0.080 g/g) and control feed (1.047±0.082 g/g), specific growth rate of treatment (1.222±0.045% body weight/day) and control feed (1.341±0.041% body weight/day), and apparent net protein utilization of treatment (46.371±4.683%) and control feed (46.443±4.360%) were not significantly different (P>0.05). To conclude, Biofad microbes can improve digestibility of hydrilla; therefore mixed of fermented hydrilla meal and smooth caridina meal can replace fish meal as protein source for bull frog feed.
